MCMS MathCounts Club
If you're interested in a mathematically challenging after-school club that will make future math and science courses seem a bit less daunting, then you'll want to look into MathCounts. Students solve interesting and challenging problems with the use of logic being essential. There is no such thing as routine, as the problems encountered are randomly presented. This leads students to develop innovative and alternative methods to solve problems while working with others in a Socratic environment. Sharing their problem-solving skills, students unknowingly become teachers and wind up expanding their own knowledge base tremendously.
How the Club is Formed:
MathCounts has a capacity of 50 students. At the beginning of the year, students take part in an initial evaluation to determine the club members (the date for this is found on this year's schedule provided below). The top 50 scores determine the club members. If there are fewer than 50 students signing up, then all students will make the club.
Club Members are responsible for the following:
- Attend each weekly meeting (with little exception)
- Complete all weekly assignments (with little exception)
- Participate in the school competition in January (used to determine the 4-person team and the 4 individuals that will compete in the Chapter competition in February)
There are state and national competitions beyond that if our team, or individual(s), advance.
When:
Each Tuesday after school from 2:50 to about 3:30, except holidays or shortened days.
Where:
Room C-6
How:
Come to room C-6 on Tuesday after school, sign in, and work with others to solve a variety of problems. Students can work solo or in a small group to discuss how they solve problems. Working with others is always the most beneficial. The activity sheets (including solutions) can be downloaded below. All other practice materials we use can be found by going to the "Links for Practice" page (link in the left nav).

Held during January here at Medea Creek Middle School. Any Math Counts student interested should be prepared to participate on each Tuesday of January, and if they make the team, be available for the competition(s) in February and March. The school competition will be held after-school Tuesdays (during the normal Math Counts Meetings): dates found on the downloadable schedule above. Any student that wants to try out must attend each part of the competition. The team will be formed from the 4 students that score the highest in the competition. The next six students will qualify as "alternates" and are also invited to the competition. Alternates have filled spots that were vacated by a student in the past.
